This guide contains information on faculty, staff, students, and lists of course offerings published in the Stanford Law School Bulletins from 1899-1998.

Faculty & Staff

Faculty Timeline

The timeline is an interactive tool to explore how faculty make-up at the Law School changed over time. You can filter by Beginning Year or Ending Year. You can mouse over the individual entries to view a faculty member's titles, the courses and subjects they taught, and additional information. You can view the timeline in full screen by clicking the button at the bottom of the module.

Notes:

  • The information here is based exclusively on the bulletins, so may not be accurate if, e.g., a faculty member left mid-year.
  • The timeline only includes faculty who taught courses during their time at the Law School.
  • Bulletins from 1990 to 1998 do not list the instructors for courses, and therefore are not displayed in this timeline, with the exception of Marvin Cherrin, who taught a course in 1989-1990 despite not being listed in the bulletin for that year under faculty. Lecturers

Faculty & Staff Gallery

The data used to generate the above timelines can also be explored using the gallery below. The gallery is sorted by length of tenure, in descending order.

Note: 26 instructors have been excluded from the gallery. These instructors were assigned specific courses in the bulletins, but do not appear in the faculty and staff section, so there is no information on their titles or tenures. They can be found in the full dataset below, most commonly under only their last names (e.g. Chace, Gerety, Tversky).

Datasets

The datasets can be exported from the Faculty & Staff Gallery module above, or can also be found in the GitHub repository linked to at the top of this page.
